Ironically, even mentioning meditation can cause anxiety for some people.

What is it? Am I doing it right? Am I supposed to see something? Is my mind quiet? What does that even mean? My brain is going a mile a minute, so my mind can’t be quiet. My butt hurts. Am I allowed to scratch my nose? Visualize what I want? I don’t know what I want! Squirrel!

If you’ve ever thought, “Why can’t someone just tell me what to do,” this may be the class for you, because that is exactly where we will start.

Meditation can take on many forms and has multiple terms – Imagery, Visualization, Mindfulness, Prayer, Mind Control, Self Hypnosis, Mantra, etc. It can spiral out and interact with a wide variety of practices – Yoga, Reiki, Energy Work, Massage, Heath and Wellness, and the list goes on.

My meditation training literally began before I was born. My mother graduated from the Silva Mind Control program while pregnant with me, and I was 16 the first time I took their classes. I’ve taken more advanced classes throughout the years, and repeated and refreshed several times, taking my personal practice deeper all the time. In the thirty years since, I’ve used “meditation,” in a variety of forms, as a regular part of my life, and I credit it for much of the success and calm I enjoy. Having recently completed my 200 hour yoga teacher training, we delved into a variety of yogic and Buddhist techniques and methods, and while different than my personal practice and training, they all have the same basic goal – focus the mind.

Now, what that means to you and how you implement it is incredibly personal. So this brief series of classes is not designed to transform your life in five hours. It’s meant to help you understand what meditation means to you at a very basic level, which will likely be a different experience for each individual.

Here’s the most fundamental tenet of this series of classes. Basic meditation is a combination of memory and creativity. That’s it. Nothing more mystical or spiritual or supernatural than that. How you personally experience it is what we need to discover, which may be mystical or spiritual or supernatural or scientific. Regardless of your experience level -  newbie, intimidated, out of practice, or regular practitioner - I’m looking forward to helping you look behind the curtain, and I promise to try to give clear, concise answers to your questions. I’m not a guru, I’m just a guy, and so I try not to give guru answers.

The series of four classes will build on each other, but missing one won’t mean you’ll be lost. There will be some suggested exercises to try at home between classes. And finally, this is an interactive series. Please anticipate participating and sharing your successes and your challenges.

You are welcome to bring a yoga mat, cushion or meditation bench to sit on, and please wear comfortable loose clothes.
